Women's Art Museum Association, or WAMA, formed with the intention of benefiting ordinary Americans in Cincinnati, Ohio area, founded the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1877. The museum has since grown to what it is today – the largest art museum in the state of Ohio. The WAMA realize that historically, art has always been created specifically for the privileged members of society, and art museums are usually funded by the wealthy class, higher educated. The average person in the lower and middle classes do not have the same access to, or understanding of the fine arts. The group was determined to bring art and art education to the masses. To make this goal more accessible to people, the Cincinnati Art Museum opened its doors always free on Saturdays. In May 2003, the financing of the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Foundation has eliminated the general admission fee to the museum for all ages. The objective therefore of the WAMA has been performed.The Cincinnati Art Museum is housed in a building built in the Romanesque style, and houses more than 60,000 pieces of art and artifacts. The periods represented in the museum's collection spans the last 6000 years. The museum collections are divided into the following areas: American decorative arts, costumes and textiles, African art, the art of the Americas, Prints, drawings and watercolors, American painting and sculpture, European painting and sculpture, classical and Near East, Far Eastern Art Art and Photography. Photography, the newest of the fine arts, is represented in the second half of the 19th century to some experhymental, avant-garde work of the late 20th century.With many pieces of art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, European painting and sculpture museum visitor will give a good overview of the different historical periods in the development of painting and sculpture in Europe. Italian Renaissance is represented by artists such as Mantegna, John Constable English landscapes, portraits of Dutch painter Frans Hal, the work of the impressionist era, German Expressionism, and one of the first Picasso, to name a few. American painting and sculpture department not cover a large span of years, but has many works of American artists, particularly realistic. Among the American realists are Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Grant Wood, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt (an impressionist painter who was born in the United States). Part of American contemporary art is also in the Cincinnati Museum of Art collection. The Classical and Near Eastern art includes, among many others, alabaster figure of around 2600 BC, a fourth century Greek krater and third century marble portrait head, along with some Egyptian pieces. The Cincinnati Art Museum presents special exhibitions periodically are also open to the public. The museum exhibits and lists of addresses is reserved.
